OnSIP is happy to announce that we are now taking vanity requests for the new 833 toll free code, which will be available starting April 22nd, 2017.

April 21st, 2017 - Update: Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released its order for the 833 toll free code opening. The 833 code officially opens on Saturday June 3rd, 2017 at 11:00 AM CT.

What is a toll free vanity number?

A toll free phone number transfers the costs of calling to your organization so that people can call you for free. Consequently, you are responsible for paying for any calls made to that number.

There are currently six toll free codes available in the US: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, and 844. Beginning next month, U.S. businesses and organizations can register 833 numbers as well.

Vanity numbers are custom combinations of the last seven digits of a toll free phone number. They typically spell out a word or phrase, such as 1-800-FLOWERS. A vanity number can be a great tool for advertising, since it makes your phone number easier to remember.

How can I get a toll free vanity number for my business?

The process for registering a toll free or vanity number varies by provider. Purchasing a regular toll free number typically does not require any interaction with your phone company.

If you are looking to register a vanity number, you will likely have to fill out some paperwork and provide additional authorization. Talk to your VoIP provider for more specific instructions on how to acquire these numbers.
