See OnSIP in action in our Live Call Map

A few of our engineers got together and worked on a little project for us - something that would easily demonstrate the ‘disruptive’ intersection between voice data and Internet service.

Today, we announced the release of this live call map, a mashup of our VoIP data and the Google Maps API that plots when an OnSIP customer picks up or hangs up the phone. We’ve been staring at it all day.

From our press release:

“Our team is excited to show just how far we’ve taken phone service,” said Rob Wolpov, President of Junction Networks. “OnSIP is - at its core – a SIP communications platform built on software. It can be leveraged with other hosted services to deliver unique features and demos. This live call map is just one small example of our software engineers getting together over a short period of time to build an engaging visual that gives visitors a glimpse into our systems.”

Since we’ve built this map, we’ve noticed a few trends that make sense. When we come into work in the New York office, the West Coast is understandably quiet. On the weekends, call volumes are low and limited to workaholics. Even though our service is mainly US based, we found OnSIP customers distributed across the world (We knew that already, but it was fun to see it live).

How it works

First, we set up a service on our server that communicates with our sip server and receives the information of a session being initiated. In this feed, we get certain parameters but, most importantly, the IP address. We run a geolocation service on the IP addresses to get latitude and longitude coordinates. We then send this information to the browser and plot them via the Google Maps API.
