GOOG-411 Alternative: OnSIP Chooses Free411

Written by Nicole Hayward | November 3, 2010 at 3:27 PM

For some time now, OnSIP has directed all 411 calls to the 1-800-GOOG-411 service. GOOG-411 has been around since 2007, offering a voice-powered directory, free of charge and free of commercials. However, as of November, 12, 2010, this service will no longer be available from Google, and so we are making preparations to change.

In learning about the GOOG-411 service discontinuation, we set out to find a free 411 service that accepts SIP calls. As you probably know, within OnSIP, all SIP calls are free. What we found was a service we are excited about: Free411.

As Free411 accepts SIP calls, we will be adding this SIP address to everyone’s PBX, and mapping 411 to this SIP address. That means after November 12th, when you dial 411, you will reach the Free411 service. The noticeable difference with the new service, Free411, is that you will hear a 10 second advertisement prior to your 411 inquiry. This is how Free411 manages to offer callers a free service. We’re just happy to keep free 411 service, and we hope you are too!
