Since we opened our doors in 2004, OnSIP's engineers and VoIP experts have longed for a 100% VoIP cellular network. So we were intrigued to hear that a company named FreedomPop may become the first-ever all-IP mobile operator. FreedomPop's service sounds like a great idea, but we sat down with our Senior Software Engineer Eric Tamme to get his critical opinion on what the advantages and limitations of such a network are today.

But first, here's some background on the service. FreedomPop’s basic cellular data plan includes 500 MB of data, unlimited messaging, and 200 minutes of VoIP calling, all for no charge. The service will offer 3G and 4G LTE over Sprint’s network, and 4G WiMAX on Clear. Users can earn additional free data by completing surveys, downloading programs, and referring friends; or they can pay a contract-free monthly plan, with unlimited voice calls for $9.99 per month.

Although the service itself is new, there’s nothing new about using VoIP as a cellular network. The idea has been around since the advent of VoIP, and it has been successfully implemented in DIY capacities. In theory, 100% VoIP cellular networks are entirely feasible. The primary limiting factor for such networks is the quality and reliability of the United States' wireless infrastructure.

“I do believe that the ‘vision’ of 100% VoIP on cellular data is going to happen,” said Senior Software Engineer Eric Tamme. “But FreedomPop doesn't have the infrastructure or the expertise to make it happen. For 100% VoIP over cellular data to work, there needs to be high speed, low latency cellular networks. The 4G stuff that's out is pretty close, and I expect with some optimization over the next few years, it will be a more likely reality.”

By 2017, 85% of the world's population will have 3G access, and 50% will have 4G access. As mobile broadband increases in availability and quality, fully functioning 100% VoIP cellular networks will be completely operational. Despite its limitations, FreedomPop's new service represents a crucial leap forward in all-VoIP cellular telephony.
