As Cassandra has been an integral part of OnSIP's geographically distributed platform, we are excited to be a part of the NYC Cassandra User Group today.

At 6:30 pm today in the eBAY NYC building, OnSIP CTO John Riordan will give a talk on the lessons we learned from implementing Cassandra across multiple data centers and the data modeling patterns specific to our platform.

With over 750 members, the NYC Cassandra User Group represents one of the largest Cassandra based fellowships in the country. The group was designed to bring a diverse cross-section of developers together to discuss their favorite Apache NoSQL database. Other upcoming talks include:

In a nutshell, OnSIP uses Cassandra to register SIP User Agents (phones), store SIP packets (call data), and implement SIP publish-subscribe (powers presence features like Busy Lamp Field). Traditionally, these solutions have been straightforward in a non-distributed environment. However, when OnSIP set out to horizontally distribute our platform for maximum service quality and reliability, we needed a database with high availability and partition tolerance, leading us to Cassandra.

John's discussion will highlight how OnSIP tackled distribution challenges with Cassandra as well as some lessons learned along the way. He will review why OnSIP's compaction strategy moved from size tiered compaction to a network topology strategy. Additionally, he will discuss how our team solved excess data problems with the database compactor.

The NYC Cassandra User Group is a great forum for discussing Cassandra related matters, and we're excited always excited to contribute to it in any way we can.
